Michigan Football Quickly embraces Freshman Quarterback Bryce Underwood
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Just months after a highly publicized recruiting flip, Michigan football has rapidly coalesced around freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025. Underwood’s dedication and maturity have already impressed teammates and coaches, signaling a seamless transition into the program.
Underwood, a Belleville High School graduate, initially committed to LSU but ultimately chose to stay close to home, committing to the Wolverines. The decision followed a poignant moment after Belleville’s elimination from the regional final, where Underwood, despite the disappointment of his team’s loss, took the time to sign a jersey and take a selfie for a young fan. Belleville coach Kevin Darty noted the impact of this gesture, stating,”The people who witnessed that were like,’I’m rooting for you forever.'”
The shift in commitment was solidified when underwood flashed a smile to teammate Elijah dotson after Dotson flipped his commitment from Pitt to Michigan.
Head coach Sherrone Moore has made it clear that underwood will not be handed the starting job, telling him he would have to earn it. Underwood’s response was resolute: he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Early impressions from veteran players reinforce the narrative of Underwood’s exceptional work ethic. Linebacker Ernest Hausmann and defensive end Derrick Moore observed Underwood consistently arriving early to spring ball to independently review plays. “He’s not no average freshman,” Moore said. “He does everything like a pro.”
Hausmann echoed this sentiment, adding, “Bryce is as good as advertised. Mature beyond his years. and he’s fit right in.”
