The 2026-27 iteration matches that ambition. Opening week action pits the Wolverines against UConn in Boston, serving as an immediate rematch of last season’s national title game. By early December, the team travels to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit to square off against Louisville, a program that aggressively retooled its roster via the transfer portal this offseason.

Navigating the Expanded Players Era Tournament and Regular-Season Caps

Thanksgiving week brings a trip to Las Vegas for the Players Era tournament, where Michigan returns as the defending champion. This season’s format requires four victories across a 16-team bracket rather than last year’s three-game path to claim the trophy and the associated name, image, and likeness (NIL) payout. The Wolverines open tournament play against Creighton. They are guaranteed three games in Las Vegas, with a fourth appearance dependent on reaching the Nov. 28 championship game.

Should Michigan miss the tournament final, a Dec. 1 home matchup against Mississippi Valley State—led by first-year head coach Mike Davis—fills the gap. This setup locks in 12 non-conference games. Combined with the newly minted 20-game Big Ten conference schedule, the Wolverines reach the maximum limit of 32 regular-season games permitted by the NCAA starting in the 2026-27 cycle, up from the historical 31-game maximum.

Additional highlights on the non-conference docket include home contests against in-state opponents Oakland and Detroit Mercy, a visit from Marquette, and a road trip to Villanova. In total, the slate features at least five games at the Crisler Center, five neutral-site matchups, and one true road game.

Exhibition Tests and Early-Season Preparation

Before regular-season action tips off, the NCAA’s updated rule allowing up to three exhibition games—an increase from the previous limit of two—gives Boynton an extended evaluation window. The exhibition schedule commences in Ann Arbor with visits from former assistant coaches: Billy Donlon brings Eastern Michigan on Oct. 11, followed by Justin Joyner and Oregon State on Oct. 16. The exhibition slate concludes on Oct. 25 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids against Houston. The Cougars finished 30-7 under coach Kelvin Sampson last season, earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

“You get better playing these games,” Boynton noted regarding the demanding setup.
