Michail Antonio: West Ham Forward Details Post-Crash Club Search

Michail Antonio, the former West Ham United striker, has joined Qatari Second Division side Al-Sailiya after acknowledging he had to “swallow his ego” to secure a return to club football following a 15-month layoff stemming from a serious car accident. The 35-year-old’s move, confirmed on Friday, marks a significant step in his recovery and a return to competitive play after a period of uncertainty. The accident, which occurred in Epping Forest in late 2024, resulted in four fractures to his femur and required three weeks of hospitalization, according to reports. Following his release from West Ham at the end of the 2024 season, Antonio faced unexpected difficulty in finding a new club, despite his decade of service in the Premier League. He trained with Brentford, Leicester City, and Charlton Athletic, but contract offers failed to materialize. “Managers wanted to sign me, but some owners didn’t want to take the risk,” Antonio told BBC Sport. This reluctance, he explained, was directly linked to concerns surrounding his recovery from the leg fractures. Despite positive feedback during trials, ownership groups reportedly hesitated due to the perceived medical risk. The forward’s pride initially resisted the prospect of trialing for a contract, a sentiment he openly admitted. “After 10 years in the Premier League, I felt I shouldn’t have to trial for a contract,” he said. However, the realities of the transfer market forced a reassessment of his position. A subsequent calf injury sustained while training with Brentford further complicated his search, occurring the day before a potential deal was set to be finalized. Antonio has made three appearances for Jamaica since the accident, but his return to consistent club football represents a crucial phase in his rehabilitation. Al-Sailiya, a five-time champion of the Qatari Second Division and two-time Qatari Stars Cup winner, will see Antonio join former Premier League players Anwar El Ghazi and Mason Holgate. The move to Qatar represents a shift in trajectory for Antonio, who was West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 68 goals. He acknowledged the humbling nature of the situation, stating he had to accept a different path to continue his career. The club has not yet announced a specific date for Antonio’s debut.
