Michael O’Carroll: Former RTÉ Sport Producer Dies at 89
Michael O’Carroll, a former producer and director with RTÉ Sport, has died at the age of 89. O’Carroll, born in Dunkerrin, County Offaly, was a proud native of Tipperary, according to RTÉ News.
Throughout a four-decade career with RTÉ, O’Carroll played a significant role in bringing All-Ireland finals and other major sporting events to the Irish public. He earned the prestigious MacNamee award for his contributions to Gaelic games and a Jacob’s award for a documentary focusing on cyclist Stephen Roche.
O’Carroll documented his experiences and insights in his memoir, Right Time and Place – A Memoir and More, published in 2022. The book details his observations on the evolution of sports coverage and the challenges of broadcasting different games. He notably identified hurling as particularly difficult to cover, citing its speed, skill variety, unpredictability, and the creativity of its athletes.
Prior to his function in sports broadcasting, O’Carroll was involved in the rural electrification scheme in 1950s Ireland, a period he described as contributing to a “social revolution.” He similarly spent time abroad, experiences recounted in his memoir. Proceeds from the sale of Right Time and Place are being donated to the Peter McVerry Trust, a charity supporting people experiencing homelessness.
A photograph from RTÉ archives shows O’Carroll in Studio One with Michael O’Hehir and Muhammad Ali, a testament to the breadth of sporting figures he encountered during his career. His book is available through www.righttimeandplace.com, and was also available via RPM Motorsport.
