Michael Imperioli: Sopranos Characters Would Likely Support Trump Today

Michael Imperioli, the actor best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti in HBO’s The Sopranos, has stated that he believes many of the show’s characters would likely support Donald Trump if the series were set in the current political landscape.

Imperioli revealed his assessment in a recent interview with The Independent, noting the inherent themes of the series revolved around the American dream and the immigrant experience. “The fact is that these characters are all immigrants, but I consider a lot of them would probably be Trump supporters, oddly enough,” he said, according to reports from multiple news outlets including Entertainment Weekly and People.

This isn’t the first time Imperioli has publicly blended the world of The Sopranos with contemporary politics. In 2020, he playfully imagined the characters as supporters of Joe Biden, posting to Instagram a fictional account of Trump being snubbed at the Bada Bing! strip club, with the caption, “VOTE BIDEN.” He told Vanity Fair at the time that he was attempting to inject humor into the political discourse, portraying the mobsters as “woke” and actively campaigning for the Democratic candidate.

The actor also discussed a potential reunion or prequel project with the cast, an idea that was considered before the 2013 death of James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano. Imperioli recalled Gandolfini questioning the practicality of revisiting the characters, joking about the require for wigs and girdles to portray them at an older age, as reported by Deadline.

The Sopranos, which originally aired on HBO from 1999 to 2007, followed the life of Fresh Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano as he navigated the challenges of family, business, and therapy. The series starred a large ensemble cast including Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Dominic Chianese, Steven Van Zandt, Tony Sirico, Robert Iler, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and Aida Turturro. The show is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
