Miami Becomes Epicenter of US Business, Tech, and Wealth as Billionaires Flee California and New York

July 26, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Miami has officially surpassed New York City in cost of living to become the second-most expensive major US metro area behind the San Francisco Bay Area, driven by an influx of corporate relocations, elite tech executives, and billionaire property buyers fleeing state tax pressures in California and New York.

The financial friction of rising consumer prices, surging home values, and the nation’s highest home-insurance premiums is reshaping the South Florida corporate landscape. According to data from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis cited by Bloomberg, regional price pressures have accelerated steadily since 2019, impacting everything from tuition to local goods and services.

Yet, the capital inflow remains unrelenting. Corporate leaders and financial heavyweights continue to establish footprints in the Sunshine State, responding to proposed billionaire taxes in California and New York’s newly adopted non-primary residence tax on homes valued over $5 million.

Ken Griffin and Citadel Lead the Brickell Financial Migration

Citadel and Citadel Securities spearheaded the corporate migration to South Florida when founder Ken Griffin announced in June 2022 that the global financial firms would move their headquarters from Chicago to Miami. In April 2022, an entity tied to Citadel paid a record $363 million for a waterfront Brickell office development site. Citadel now lists Miami as its global headquarters, with plans for a 1.2-million-square-foot tower currently in development.

Griffin also anchored his personal move by purchasing the $107 million, 4-acre Adrienne Arsht Estate in Coconut Grove in 2022. According to company statements provided to Business Insider, roughly 400 Citadel-affiliated employees, including key senior executives, are operating out of the region.

Tech Giants and Venture Capitalists Rework Indian Creek and Wynwood Real Estate

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced his departure from Seattle for Miami via Instagram in 2023, purchasing neighboring mansions on Indian Creek Island for $79 million and $68 million. Bezos cited Blue Origin’s operations in Cape Canaveral and his parents’ return to the city where he attended high school as primary catalysts for the move.

Brickell has become an epicenter in Miami for social media influencers

Peter Thiel’s investment firm, Thiel Capital, opened a Wynwood office on December 31, 2025, to complement its Los Angeles operations. Thiel maintained a personal residence in Miami after purchasing an $18 million Venetian Islands mansion in 2020 and officially shifted his voter registration to Florida in 2024.

Meanwhile, Palantir confirmed its headquarters relocation to the Miami area, listing its principal executive office in Aventura via regulatory filings. Months prior, CEO Alex Karp purchased a $46 million Venetian Islands mansion, followed by an adjacent $28.5 million property acquisition in April 2026.

On Indian Creek Island, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan made Miami history in March by purchasing a $170 million property on the exclusive enclave, setting a new Miami-Dade County home sales record for the under-construction estate. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin executed multi-million-dollar real estate acquisitions in Coconut Grove and Allison Island, respectively.

Consumer Brands and Global Enterprises Shift Headquarters to South Florida

The corporate wave extends far beyond financial services and tech conglomerates. Skincare manufacturer Galderma announced in June 2025 that it would establish its new US headquarters in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, targeting 150 employees by 2028 and citing the concentration of local med spas and the Miami Health District.

Playboy Inc. followed suit in August 2025, announcing the relocation of its global headquarters from Los Angeles to Miami Beach alongside plans for a new Playboy Club and content studios. Playboy Inc. CEO Ben Kohn noted in a public statement that Miami Beach offers the ideal cultural alignment for the brand’s next operational chapter.

In January, MSC Group’s cruise division opened its North American headquarters near PortMiami, representing a $100 million investment housing more than 400 employees. Soccer infrastructure also expanded as FC Barcelona relocated its North American division’s commercial offices to Miami’s One Biscayne Tower in April 2025, buoyed by an incentive grant from the Miami Downtown Development Authority.

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced via LinkedIn in March that he and his wife were leaving Seattle after four decades, settling into a $44 million penthouse at the Four Seasons Private Residences in Surfside.

Sustaining South Florida Market Expansion

The transformation of Miami from a seasonal luxury destination into a primary global commerce hub shows no signs of slowing down, despite cost-of-living metrics climbing past traditional financial capitals. As institutional capital, executive talent, and multinational headquarters continue to anchor themselves along Biscayne Bay, local commercial markets face a new era of fiscal maturation.
