Mexico Boosts Community Tourism as National Priority | Sheinbaum Decree & QRoo Focus
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, President of Mexico, signed a decree on February 26, 2026, formally designating Community Tourism as an activity of public interest and a national priority. The decision, announced during a press conference, elevates the status of a tourism model focused on local control and benefit. The decree establishes a national framework to support and promote community-based tourism initiatives throughout Mexico. This includes the creation of a distinctive emblem to identify and certify tourism projects that meet established criteria for community involvement and sustainable practices. According to a statement released by the Mexican government, the initiative aims to ensure that tourism revenues directly benefit local communities and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage and natural resources. The move comes in response to growing calls for a more equitable distribution of tourism’s economic benefits, particularly in regions like Quintana Roo, where the industry has historically been dominated by large corporations. Concerns have been raised regarding potential damage to local ecosystems and cultural sites due to unregulated tourism activities. Local stakeholders have specifically requested increased security measures to mitigate negative impacts. President Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of community participation in the planning and management of tourism projects, stating that local residents should be the primary beneficiaries of the industry’s growth. The government intends to work closely with community organizations and indigenous groups to develop and implement tourism strategies that respect local traditions and environmental sustainability. The decree also outlines plans for the development of training programs to enhance the skills of local residents in areas such as hospitality, tour guiding, and sustainable tourism management. These programs will be designed to empower communities to effectively participate in and benefit from the tourism sector. The government has not yet announced a specific timeline for the implementation of these programs.
