Metz Art Galerie: First Edition Review & Insights | February 2024

Metz, France – The inaugural Metz Art Galerie, a new art fair held February 13-15 at the Metz Congrès Robert Schuman, concluded with a mixed reception, according to reports. Whereas organizers aimed to broaden access to contemporary art, the event was launched rapidly and operated without formal selection criteria for participating galleries.

Didier Vesse, the artistic director of Metz Art Galerie, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s launch, stating, “It’s a pleasure to participate in the construction of the new Metz Art Galerie fair,” as reported by La Semaine. Vesse, who previously directed ArtéNîm and Lille Art Up!, oversaw an exhibition featuring approximately 28 galleries, with a focus on establishing connections with art spaces in Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium.

The fair’s ambition, as outlined in a press release, is to demystify contemporary art and encourage public engagement. The event showcased a range of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, glasswork, ceramics, printmaking, and urban art.

The speed of the fair’s organization presented challenges. According to Le Quotidien de l’Art, commercialization of the event only began in September 2025, leaving limited time for preparation and gallery selection. Many galleries participated, the report noted, “out of friendship for Didier Vesse.”

Charlélie Couture, a multidisciplinary artist from Nancy, served as the guest of honor for the inaugural edition. He performed a concert on February 13th, and his presence was intended to embody the spirit of discovery that Metz Art Galerie seeks to promote.

Metz Événements, the organizing body, hopes to establish Metz Art Galerie as a sustainable annual event, contributing to the city’s cultural landscape and enhancing its profile within the contemporary art scene. The fair included galleries such as Bertheas, Platini, Artima, and Au-delà des Apparences, representing a diverse range of artistic styles and approaches.

Admission to the fair was €8, with free entry for those under 12. The event drew to a close on February 15th, leaving organizers to assess the initial response and plan for future editions.
