Mesilla NM: Historic Town, Adobe Buildings & Billy the Kid

March 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

In the historic plaza of Mesilla, Fresh Mexico, a trial concluded in 1881 that would cement the legend of Billy the Kid. The outlaw, born Henry McCarty, was convicted of the murder of Sheriff William Brady, a key figure in the Lincoln County War, at the Mesilla courthouse.

Mesilla, located just outside Las Cruces, served as a crucial location in the unfolding drama of Billy the Kid’s life. The town’s association with the Kid transformed him, according to local accounts, from a rebellious youth into a symbol of frontier defiance. The events in Mesilla were pivotal in shaping his destiny.

The trial itself was a significant event for the small New Mexican town. The proceedings drew attention to Mesilla, establishing a lasting connection between the community and the notorious outlaw. Today, the town’s historic buildings and landmarks continue to draw visitors interested in learning more about Billy the Kid’s exploits.

Born in New York City around 1859, McCarty’s family eventually settled in Silver City, New Mexico, where his mother died when he was fourteen. This early hardship contributed to his path toward a life of crime. His trial in Mesilla followed a period of escalating conflict during the Lincoln County War, a violent feud between rival factions vying for control of the region’s economic and political landscape.

The Basilica of San Albino, built of adobe in 1855, stands at the heart of Mesilla, a silent witness to the events that unfolded during Billy the Kid’s time there. The Billy the Kid Gift Shop, located in a historic building, offers visitors information about the outlaw and his connection to the town, alongside a variety of souvenirs.

The story of Pat Garrett, the sheriff who later tracked down and killed Billy the Kid, is also interwoven with the history of Mesilla and the surrounding areas, further solidifying the town’s place in Western lore. The pursuit and eventual death of Billy the Kid, though not occurring in Mesilla itself, remain intrinsically linked to the narrative that began with his trial and conviction there.
