Mercedes VLE: New Electric Luxury Van with 700km Range Revealed

Mercedes-Benz Drives into Luxury EV Segment with New VLE Model

Stuttgart, Germany – Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch a new all-electric luxury vehicle, the VLE, aimed at both VIP transport and large families, with a focus on high comfort and advanced technology. The announcement comes as the automaker continues to expand its electric vehicle offerings and leverage artificial intelligence to enhance the driving experience.

The VLE, first previewed to select media in Germany earlier this year, boasts a range exceeding 700 kilometers and supports ultra-swift 300 kW charging, capable of adding 355 kilometers of range in approximately 15 minutes under ideal conditions. This addresses a key concern for potential buyers in the luxury segment who may be hesitant to switch to electric vehicles due to range anxiety, according to Mercedes-Benz representatives.

The vehicle’s interior is designed for maximum flexibility and comfort. Mercedes-Benz highlights the potential for eight passengers to travel comfortably, or for a configuration prioritizing spaciousness for fewer occupants. Seats can be easily adjusted, removed, or reconfigured to optimize space for passengers or luggage, with a maximum luggage capacity of 4078 liters with all seats removed. Features include reclining seats, a large retractable TV screen, and integrated cooling/heating systems.

Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT via the Azure OpenAI Service into its MBUX Voice Assistant, enhancing the in-car experience. The system, initially launched as a U.S. Beta program in June 2023, and now available in over three million vehicles globally as of December 2024, allows drivers to inquire a wide range of knowledge-based questions and engage in natural language conversations. The MBUX Voice Assistant uses Microsoft Bing web search data and ChatGPT through Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service to provide up-to-date answers.

The VLE shares its platform with other Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles, a design choice that is evident in its exterior styling. Despite this, Mercedes-Benz emphasizes the luxurious interior and advanced technology as key differentiators.

Pricing for the VLE has not yet been confirmed, but estimates suggest a starting price of around 70,000 euros, potentially rising to 110,000 euros for fully equipped models. The vehicle is expected to arrive in Norway by the end of 2026, with availability in other markets to follow.

Mercedes-Benz announced the integration of ChatGPT via Azure OpenAI Service in June 2023, transforming the in-car experience for drivers. The company was one of the first automakers to introduce ChatGPT as a U.S. Beta program last year.
