BUDAPEST, Hungary - Mercedes appears to have found a performance boost by reverting to a previous suspension package just before the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking a potential turning point in their 2024 Formula 1 season. The change coincided with George Russell securing a podium finish and Oliver Antonelli scoring his first points since the Canadian Grand Prix.
The decision to revert to the earlier suspension setup suggests that the newer package introduced in May contributed to recent performance struggles. Mercedes is now hoping this shift in direction will provide a more stable platform for the remainder of the campaign. The Brackley-based team had been seeking improvements after a challenging start to the season, with both drivers experiencing difficulties maximizing the car’s potential.
The suspension change also proved beneficial for rookie driver Antonelli, who has faced a learning curve in his debut season. The improved car balance appeared to bolster his confidence, as noted in a recent Formula1.com article. Technical Director James Allison has also publicly praised Russell, stating he is “setting a very, very high bar,” indicating the team’s expectations for consistent performance from its experienced driver.
Beyond on-track performance, speculation surrounding Mercedes’ 2026 driver lineup has been a prominent topic. Recent confirmation from Max Verstappen that he will remain with Red Bull Racing has diminished those rumors. Russell has indicated that a new contract with mercedes is highly likely, stating it is indeed a matter of “when not if.” This suggests a degree of stability within the team’s driver plans as they look towards the future.
With the driver situation seemingly settled, Mercedes will now focus on challenging ferrari for second place in the Constructors’ Championship. They previously held the P2 position earlier in the season but have as been overtaken. The team will be aiming to capitalize on the recent performance gains and close the gap in the remaining races.
