Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili Sets Sights on Record-Breaking Title Defenses
UFC Bantamweight Champion Merab Dvalishvili is already looking beyond his upcoming bout with Petr Yan, outlining an ambitious plan to defend his title four times in the next year and establish a new benchmark for divisional dominance. The Georgian fighter expressed his desire to break the record for consecutive title defenses, stating, “I would like to do the same - four times again next year. I will be the first who will break record (to defend) my title four times, and if I fight again four times, I will be the first who does back-to-back; that’ll be good.”
While the allure of becoming a two-division champion exists for many UFC titleholders, Dvalishvili is currently prioritizing solidifying his reign at 135 pounds. This focus comes as he prepares for a crucial matchup against former champion Petr yan this Saturday, and anticipates future challenges from the rising contenders within his weight class. His commitment to the bantamweight division underscores a strategic approach to building a lasting legacy.
Dvalishvili remains open to opportunities presented by the UFC, including potential super-fights or a move to another weight class, but insists his immediate attention is on defending his belt. “At this moment, I’m happy, and I’m fine where I am now,” he said. “I want to defend my belt. I have to focus on a top opponent like Petr Yan, and we have other contenders in our weight class. After, we will see.”
He reiterated his willingness to entertain UFC proposals, adding, “if UFC asks me to change the weight class or make some super-fights – no problem, I will take it – but right now, I’m focusing on my division.” This stance signals a calculated approach, balancing ambition with a dedication to his current championship responsibilities.
