JUPITER, Fla. – Western Kentucky University Men’s Golf is positioned for a strong finish at the Argent Financial Classic, sitting tied for sixth place after two rounds of play. The Hilltoppers are just four strokes off the lead and three strokes back from second place, setting the stage for a competitive final day on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
WKU has showcased notable performance throughout the tournament, currently leading the field with 39 birdies. The team also ranks third in average on Par 4s (4.04) and is tied for seventh on Par 5s (4.63) and tied for eighth on Par 3s (3.20). This tournament is a key early-season event for the Hilltoppers as they aim to build momentum and establish themselves as contenders in collegiate golf.
Junior Gage Doyle is leading the WKU charge, tied for eighth place individually with a 5-under score of 139 – a new career-best 36-hole score. Doyle has recorded 10 birdies through the first two rounds, tying for the seventh most in the tournament.
Redshirt-freshman Ethan Smith and freshman Will Easterlin both carded 3-under 69s on Monday, propelling them into a tie for 34th place with an overall 1-under score of 143. junior Rafe Blankenship is tied for 48th place at 1-over (145), while sophomore Trevor Drew is tied for 61st at 3-over (147).
“It was another really solid day as a team,” saeid head coach Austin King. “Everyone was in the game again and Ethan and Gage really stepped up and put two great rounds together. We’ve got a great possibility to make another push up the leaderboard with it being tightly packed. I think these guys can continue to play within themselves,post a good round tomorrow and I think we’ll like where we’re at!”
