Meningitis Outbreak in UK: Vaccine Demand Surges | Latest Updates

March 22, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Two students have died and eleven others are seriously ill in Kent, England, following an outbreak of Meningitis B, prompting a rapid vaccination campaign targeting university students, authorities confirmed on March 17, 2026.

The outbreak, centered in Canterbury, has led to a surge in demand for vaccinations, with students queuing at the University of Kent’s sports center to receive the MenB vaccine, according to reports. Kent Community Health NHS Trust is administering the vaccinations as part of an effort to contain the spread of the infection.

Dr. Tom Nutt, chief executive of the Meningitis Now charity, stated that babies, children, and young adults are most at risk, and the bacteria spreads more easily in close-quarters environments like university halls of residence. “Cases of the disease have been decreasing thanks to the effectiveness of vaccines, which are now available on the NHS,” Dr. Nutt said, adding that the current outbreak is “quite shocking and very unusual.”

Meningitis B is a serious infection that can affect the lining of the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to life-threatening complications, including sepsis and brain damage. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, cold hands and feet, delirium, and fatigue, and can worsen rapidly.

The recent increase in cases is attributed, in part, to declining vaccination rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Authorities are now urging those who have not yet received the MenACWY vaccine, which protects against four strains of meningitis, to get vaccinated, with the vaccine freely available to eligible individuals up to the age of 25.

In addition to the vaccination program, public health officials are similarly distributing prophylactic antibiotics to close contacts of confirmed cases to help prevent further spread. The government is pushing for 5,000 vaccinations among students in the affected area.

While the MenACWY vaccine protects against four types of bacteria that cause meningitis, the MenB vaccine specifically targets the Meningitis B strain responsible for the current outbreak. The six-in-one vaccine, routinely given to infants, also offers some protection against meningitis.

The National Health Service (NHS) is continuing to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as the outbreak evolves. As of March 21, 2026, no further deaths have been reported, but health officials remain vigilant.
