Meningitis Outbreak: Cases Fall – Is Peak Over? | Club Chemistry Link

March 21, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The number of new meningitis cases linked to a nightclub in Canterbury, Kent, slowed on Friday, with only two additional infections reported, offering a potential sign that containment efforts may be gaining traction. However, health officials caution that the outbreak is not yet over and further cases are expected in the coming days.

The outbreak originated at Club Chemistry between March 5th and 7th, identified as a “super-spreader event” where an unusually large number of people were infected. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has urged anyone who visited the club during those dates, as well as students at the University of Kent, to receive preventative antibiotics.

Louise Jones-Roberts, owner of Club Chemistry, stated the club “will not open until this is under control and people are safe,” following the hospitalisation of two staff members with meningitis. She described a climate of “a lot of fear and anxiety” within the city, noting the ingrained public response to potential meningitis symptoms – checking for rashes. Jones-Roberts expressed relief at the widening of vaccine eligibility announced by Health Secretary Wes Streeting to include all who attended the club from March 5th onwards.

Approximately 10,000 people have now received antibiotics as part of the public health response, aimed at eliminating the bacteria and preventing further illness or transmission. The incubation period for the disease is believed to be up to 10 days, suggesting that the full extent of the outbreak linked to the club may not yet be known.

Three members of the University of Kent cheerleading society are among those currently hospitalized with the disease, according to Olivia Parkins, a member of the society. The outbreak has already resulted in two fatalities.

The UKHSA continues to urge anyone who visited Club Chemistry between March 5th and 7th to collect precautionary antibiotics. The French authorities alerted the UKHSA to a second confirmed case involving an individual who had attended the University of Kent, further highlighting the potential for international spread.
