As⁤ Lyle and Erik Menéndez’s‍ new parole hearings ‌approach, their attorney, Mark Geragos, addressed the question of their post-release plans. Speaking with Us Weekly ⁣ and other reporters at a⁢ press conference held by the Menéndez family on Wednesday, October 16, ‍Geragos stated, “I won’t speak to whether [Erik and Lyle] have a plan.”

The brothers are currently serving life⁢ sentences ⁣for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menéndez, in ‍their Beverly Hills, California home. The case garnered⁤ national attention⁢ due to the brothers’ claims of enduring ⁢years of physical, sexual, and emotional ⁣abuse at‌ the hands of their father.

Geragos‍ stressed he had no proof ‌the hearings were rigged but argued⁣ that Erik and Lyle ‍should have been strong candidates for parole. “It was Kabuki theater,” he alleged, ⁤referencing the‍ conventional Japanese art form. “[If] you remember during‍ the ⁤resentencing hearing [that] there was all‌ kinds of shenanigans by the board of‌ parole to the point where the judge … ⁤actually stood up on the bench and on the record and said, ‘This is stupid.'”

According to Geragos, the ⁤parole⁣ commissioners’ alleged attempt to ⁤change the post-release risk assessment was ‍”beyond the ‌pale.”

Erik’s wife, Tammi, shared a similar ⁢critique following her ⁣husband’s hearing ‌on Thursday, October ‍17.

“Parole Commissioner Robert Barton ⁣had his mind made up to deny Erik parole from⁣ the start,” she‌ claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter). ⁢”This was a complete setup, and Erik never stood a chance! #injustice.”
