Meloni Denies Sanremo Festival Appearance Rumors | Italy News

ROME – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly dismissed reports of a planned appearance at the Sanremo Music Festival, calling the claims “totally invented.” The statement, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, followed days of speculation fueled by comments from festival director Carlo Conti.

“I’ve been reading for days about my alleged participation in the first evening of Sanremo. A totally invented story, immediately denied by Palazzo Chigi and subsequently by Carlo Conti himself,” Meloni wrote. Despite the denials, she added, “the story continues.”

Conti addressed the rumors during a press conference on Saturday, the day before the festival’s opening night. He stated, “The invitation to Giorgia Meloni? Pure science fiction.” He emphasized his commitment to remaining politically independent, noting that he had previously been labeled as aligned with Matteo Renzi during a different administration. “For many of you, years ago I was Renzi’s man, now I’m Meloni’s man, tomorrow will I be the Five Star Movement’s? I am a free man,” Conti said, as reported by Il Messaggero. He added, with a touch of self-deprecation, “I proudly do the fool’s job.”

The controversy arose from initial reports suggesting Meloni might attend the festival, prompting questions about potential political influence. Conti firmly denied any pressure to favor specific artists or political factions. He likewise clarified that Meloni, like any other citizen, is free to purchase a ticket and attend the event if she chooses. “She is a free citizen, if she buys a ticket she can come,” he stated.

The Rai public broadcasting company also issued a statement, excluding any contact between Rai and Palazzo Chigi regarding the festival. Conti further defended his selection of comedian Andrea Pucci as co-host, dismissing suggestions of political motivations behind the choice. “I have always had a Rai that has been on my side, but in absolute autonomy,” Conti said, according to Virgilio.

Meloni’s social media response underscored the sensitivity surrounding the intersection of politics and popular culture in Italy. She concluded her post by stating she would continue to focus on her duties as Prime Minister, expressing confidence that Sanremo would be a success “without imaginary guests.”
