Melania Trump Hosts Russia and Ukraine at White House to Urge Lasting Ceasefire

Melania Trump Hosts Russia and Ukraine at White House to Urge Lasting Ceasefire

November 5, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Melania Trump hosted representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on Thursday to advocate for a durable ceasefire in the ongoing war. The meeting with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitrijev and Ukrainian lead negotiator David Arakhamia follows a nearly week-long truce in the occupied city of Oleshky that concluded on Sunday. This ceasefire, described as the most significant since the 2022 invasion, was brokered by the human rights commissioners of Russia and Ukraine with support from the United States. During the press conference, Melania Trump noted that every significant transformation starts with a small spark, and added, I hope Oleshky can inspire more peace.

The event, reported by ABC Nyheter, comes amid a conflict that has devastated the Kherson region.

Humanitarian Evacuations from Oleshky

The recent nearly week-long truce allowed for the evacuation of several hundred civilians from Oleshky, a city that held approximately 24,000 residents before the Russian invasion in February 2022. According to Dagbladet, the city has been described as “hell on earth,” having suffered continuous artillery fire, landmines, and severe shortages of food and medical supplies while under Russian control.

By the time the humanitarian corridor opened, fewer than 2,000 people remained in the city. Many residents had resorted to eating grass and roots to survive, according to Ukraine’s ambassador to Norway. Around 200 accepted evacuation, most wishing to travel to Ukrainian-controlled territory, while a few dozen opted to go toward Russia. Families reunited at the border, with some reporting that they had waited years for the opportunity to leave.

The evacuation process offered residents the choice to move to either Ukrainian or Russian-controlled territory, or to remain in the city with replenished food and medical supplies. Many opted to stay, with some residents telling authorities they did not want to leave their homes. Those who chose to evacuate faced a long journey through Russia and Belarus before reaching Ukrainian territory, where they were greeted by relatives. One returnee, who had lost 20 kilograms over the past year, described the severe physical toll of the occupation, noting that health issues forced a hospital stay.

During the White House meeting, Melania Trump handed personal letters to the two envoys for the Russian and Ukrainian presidents, thanking Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for their support in the ceasefire. The humanitarian operation earned recognition from both sides; Russian envoy Kirill Dmitrijev acknowledged Trump’s role, while Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, presented her with a Ukrainian state order.

President Zelenskyy publicly thanked Melania Trump for her assistance in drawing global attention to the catastrophe. In a statement posted to social media on October 31, Zelenskyy noted that the truce enabled the clearing of mines along routes into Oleshky and the delivery of emergency aid, allowing those who wished to leave to be extracted safely.

Evacuees face risks while others remain in Oleshky

Despite the successful evacuation, the situation remains fragile. Legal expert Cecilie Hellestveit had previously warned in Dagbladet about the risks inherent in the evacuation process, specifically the potential for civilians to be trapped if transported through Russian territory as a prerequisite for reaching Ukraine.

The humanitarian conditions in Oleshky remain dire for those who chose to stay. While the specific mission has concluded, Russia’s human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova stated that both sides are reportedly committed to conducting regular humanitarian missions in and around the area. The mission is over, but unfortunately, the living conditions in Oleshky remain extremely difficult, she told The Guardian, noting that efforts to support the remaining residents would continue.
