Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” Airs Tonight on Nova Cinema
Prague, Czech Republic – Mel Gibson returns too the screen tonight as farmer Benjamin Martin in the critically acclaimed ancient drama, “The Patriot,” airing at 20:00 on Nova Cinema. The film, lauded for its authenticity adn compelling narrative, draws heavily from real historical figures and events of the American Revolutionary war.
“The Patriot” distinguishes itself by grounding its story in reality. Screenwriter Robert Rodat, known for “Saving Private Ryan,” intentionally based key characters on actual people. Farmer benjamin Martin is a composite of several real personalities, while the ruthless Colonel William Tavington is directly inspired by Colonel Banaster Tarleton, infamously nicknamed “bloody Ban” and known for the Waxhaw Massacre where he ordered the deaths of Continental Army soldiers led by abraham Buford.
Gibson’s portrayal of a man fighting for freedom and revenge echoes his earlier role as William Wallace in 1995’s “Braveheart.” The actor himself found one scene notably challenging: “I could never hit anyone with a Tomahawk – I just don’t even wont to do it – I find it inhuman and cruel, but I can imagine how much he is.”
