Megumi Ishii Faces Scrutiny Over Fingernail Incident in Diet
Japan Restoration Party member Megumi Ishii faced public scrutiny after video footage captured her appearing to tend to her fingernails during a session, prompting online criticism and a series of explanations before a formal apology.
Video Capture During Diet Deliberations
The controversy began when Fumiyo Okuda of the Party of Life published YouTube footage of Diet proceedings on October 19. The recording showed Ishii, seated diagonally behind Okuda during the upper house budget committee meeting, using a thin object to press against her fingernails. The video circulated widely on social media platforms, drawing sharp backlash from viewers who questioned her focus during legislative duties.
Ishii Claims Ballpoint Pen Removed Foreign Matter
Ishii subsequently deleted the post and offered a revised explanation, stating that foreign matter had entered her fingernail and caused pain, leading her to use a ballpoint pen to remove it rather than perform nail care.
Ishii Served as City Council Member in Toride
Ishii is a native of Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture, where she served five terms as a city council member before winning her first election to the House of Councillors in July 2025. She is the daughter of former House of Councillors member Akira Ishii.
Critics Question Ishii's Focus on Parliamentary Debates
A Toride city assembly member described Ishii as quiet during municipal meetings but lively at social gatherings, expressing local doubts regarding her transition to national politics. Critics in local and national political circles maintained that representatives should direct their complete attention toward parliamentary debates while in session, leaving open questions regarding public trust as the Diet calendar proceeds.
