Meghan Markle Speech: Duchess Mocked for ‘I’ Count & Charity Speech ‘Fail’
Claims that Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, repeatedly referenced herself during a 2022 charity speech have resurfaced following the publication of new excerpts from Tom Bower’s forthcoming book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family. Bower alleges that Meghan mentioned “I” nearly fifty times in a ten-minute address to the One Young World Summit in Manchester.
According to Bower’s book, serialised in The Times, organisers expressed concern over the speech’s focus. He quotes Ella Robertson, daughter of One Young World’s co-founder Kate Robertson, as saying, “She’s f***ed it,” after reviewing the proposed text. Bower writes that, instead of concentrating on the charity’s work, Meghan’s speech centred on her personal experiences and “her rise to fame.”
The allegations have prompted a reaction online, with some social media users criticising the Duchess. Comments shared on Reddit, as reported by various news outlets, described the alleged behaviour as “disturbing” and indicative of an “ego” problem. Others questioned the authenticity of the speech, suggesting it appeared “so fake” when viewed without sound.
The One Young World Summit marked Prince Harry and Meghan’s first joint public appearance in the UK since stepping down as senior working royals in 2020. The event brings together young leaders from over 190 countries to address global issues such as climate change, human rights, and mental health. Meghan, as a co-founder of One Young World, was invited to deliver a keynote speech.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes has dismissed Bower’s claims as part of a pattern of “deranged conspiracy, and melodrama.” They accused the author of having a “fixation” and of building a career on “constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met.” The spokesperson urged those seeking factual information to look elsewhere.
Bower’s book also details alleged demands made by Meghan’s team regarding the event, including a request for “tight scrutiny of ticketing,” according to MSN. The author previously claimed that the Duchess’s pursuit of “global stardom” created tension within her marriage, as she sought to establish herself as a philanthropist and maintain her public profile.
The release of Betrayal is scheduled for March 26, according to reports. The book promises a behind-the-scenes look at the events surrounding the Sussexes’ departure from royal duties and their subsequent efforts to build a new life in the United States.
