Medef President Patrick Martin Urges Entrepreneurs to Embrace Liberalism and Fight Statism
At the opening of a conference in Paris, Medef president Patrick Martin delivered a sharp critique of French economic policy, declaring that state interventionism has failed to secure the nation’s competitive standing. Martin argued against heavy regulations and high taxation as the country looks toward the upcoming presidential election cycle.
Challenging State Intervention and Historical Policies
Patrick Martin addressed an audience of approximately 20,000 attendees over the two-day summit held on the court Philippe Chatrier at Roland-Garros, framing the gathering around the core theme of courage. The head of Medef asserted that state-driven economic management has fallen short of expectations. “If statism were a solution, we would be world champions,” Martin stated, calling on entrepreneurs to act as “militants de l’entreprise”.
Martin detailed what he characterized as a long accumulation of policy errors by the state. According to his remarks at the conference, these missteps range from the implementation of the 35-hour workweek and the retirement age set at 60 to a housing policy inspired by narrow budgetary constraints. He claimed these measures have been at the expense of purchasing power, employment access, and overall economic growth. Businesses attempting to operate within this framework must regularly confront what he termed “absurd” regulations and a gaseous, illegible environment.
Regulatory Burdens and Wealth Inequality Debates
The Medef leader specifically targeted recent legislative initiatives, pointing to the 38th simplification bill and the 20th version of MaPrimeRenov deployed in under three years as evidence of instability. Martin also criticized the salary transparency law, labeling it a technocratic and egalitarian UFO that runs counter to economic logic.
Beyond regulatory hurdles, Martin pushed back against political discourse surrounding national wealth distribution. He maintained that France is one of the most egalitarian countries in the world, warning “certains responsables politiques” to stop fueling what he described as a myth of extreme inequality and jealousy. He dismissed wealth tax proposals, such as the Zucman tax and its avatars, arguing that such measures fail to address the decline of France and instead discourage those who dedicate their lives and capital to domestic prosperity.
Future Pensions and Historical Recognition
Shifting focus toward structural reforms ahead of the 2027 budgets and the presidential election, Martin addressed the debate over retirement models. He advocated for more capitalization for the benefit of future retirees. “Cessons d’en faire une querelle dogmatique ou un totem,” Martin said, noting that capitalization pensions already exist in France and are rather well managed by unions for civil servants.
On a cultural and historical note, the Medef president endorsed a campaign led by the grandson of industrialist André Citroën to have the visionary engineer and immigrant’s son inducted into the Panthéon. Martin argued that honoring an industrialist and patriotic entrepreneur would be a recognition of business leaders as key actors in the nation’s success.
The debates launched at Roland-Garros signal an aggressive stance from the business community as political parties prepare platforms for the upcoming electoral cycle. With the Medef demanding economic liberalization, the coming months will test whether policymakers respond to calls for deregulation or maintain traditional state-led models.
