Measles Exposure Alert on Chi-Cheemaun Ferry
Health Officials Urge Passenger Vigilance After Recent Crossings
Public health authorities are alerting individuals who traveled on the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry that they may have been exposed to the measles virus. The exposures occurred on specific sailings in mid-July, prompting an urgent call for passengers to check their vaccination status and monitor for symptoms.
Potential Measles Contact Identified
Grey Bruce Public Health has been notified by Public Health Sudbury & Districts of two separate instances where individuals with measles were present on the ferry. The public is advised to be aware of potential exposure during the following travel times:
- Thursday, July 17: The 11 a.m. crossing from South Baymouth to Tobermory, and the 1:15 p.m. crossing from Tobermory to South Baymouth.
- Monday, July 21: The 1:15 p.m. crossing from Tobermory to South Baymouth, and the 3:30 p.m. crossing from South Baymouth to Tobermory.
Health Advisory Issued for Ferry Passengers
Anyone who was on the ferry during these identified dates and times should verify their immunization records. Measles symptoms typically manifest seven to 21 days after contact with an infected person.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection, with the CDC reporting that 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people close to someone with measles will get sick if they are also unvaccinated.
