Measles Outbreak in Israel: Rising Deaths Prompt Urgent Vaccination push
A concerning measles outbreak is escalating in Israel, tragically claiming the lives of four infants in the past week. The Ministry of Health has issued urgent warnings and reinforced vaccination recommendations as the highly contagious and perhaps fatal viral disease spreads.
Health officials report all fatalities have occurred in children under two and a half years old, with three deaths occurring within the last seven days. They emphasize the critical need for swift medical attention if complications arise, urging families to contact healthcare providers immediately upon noticing symptoms.
“Measles is a preventable disease, and a safe, effective vaccine is readily available,” a Ministry of Health spokesperson stated. “Vaccination remains the most crucial step in protecting our children.”
To combat the outbreak, vaccination schedules have been adjusted. While the standard vaccination is still recommended at one and six years of age, authorities are now advising an accelerated second dose at 18 months for children in affected areas. Furthermore,an additional dose is recommended for infants aged 6-11 months residing in or traveling to epidemic zones.
Currently, 21 measles patients are hospitalized, the majority being unvaccinated children under the age of six. Six of these children are in intensive care, highlighting the severe nature of the illness in some cases.
Eight cities have been officially declared epidemic zones: jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Bnei brak, Harish, Modiin Illit, Nof Hagalil, Kiryat Gat, and Ashdod. Residents of these localities are encouraged to utilize maternal and child health centers, health insurance providers, and dedicated vaccination centers – no prior appointment is necessary – to bolster vaccination efforts and protect themselves and their communities.
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely and urges all eligible individuals to ensure they are fully vaccinated against measles.
