MCU: Mad Thinker’s Origin Revealed in Fantastic Four Comic Tie-In
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) expanding narrative has introduced a key villain from the Fantastic Four’s comic book history with the release of Fantastic Four: First Foes #1, a tie-in comic to the 2025 film Fantastic Four: First Steps. Whereas the character, known as René Rodin and eventually the Mad Thinker, was only referenced in the film, the comic book provides a deeper appear into his origins and connection to the team’s formation.
Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the core team, is set in a retro-futuristic 1960s. The film depicts the Fantastic Four protecting the world from the cosmic entity Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson. The comic book prequel, Fantastic Four: First Foes, reveals Rodin’s pivotal role in the mission that granted the team their powers.
According to the comic, Rodin served as the mission controller during the fateful space flight. He notably highlighted his prior academic relationship with Dr. Reed Richards (Pascal), stating he was Richards’ college professor and had been specifically requested by Richards to oversee the mission. Rodin asserted that he and Richards were the only individuals possessing the intellect necessary for successful faster-than-light travel. This boast led to him being dubbed a “great thinker” by a reporter, a moniker that foreshadows his future alias.
The narrative further establishes Rodin’s critical contribution to the team’s survival. After the ship encounters the cosmic storm that imbues the Fantastic Four with their abilities, This proves Rodin who swiftly calculates a new vector, relaying the information to H.E.R.B.I.E. And averting disaster. Richards acknowledges this in narration, referring to Rodin as “the mad genius we’d come to know as the Great Thinker.”
The comic also reveals Rodin’s burgeoning resentment at not being among those exposed to the cosmic storm. This frustration lays the groundwork for his eventual descent into villainy. The introduction of the Mad Thinker, following the events depicted in Fantastic Four: First Steps, positions him as a potential recurring antagonist for the team, particularly as the MCU moves toward larger crossover events like Secret Wars. The character’s established connection to the Fantastic Four’s origin story provides a strong foundation for future storylines.
Fantastic Four: First Foes #1 is currently available in comic stores.
