McTominay Rules Out Man Utd Return, Prefers Napoli Stay | Transfer News

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Manchester United, stating his commitment to the Italian club and suggesting a long-term future in Naples. The 29-year-old, who departed Old Trafford for Serie A in 2024, has become a key figure for Napoli, winning the Serie A Player of the Year award after helping the club secure the league title last season.

“My agent has not communicated with anyone regarding my future,” McTominay told Corriere dello Sport this week. “He only speaks with me and with the club. He hasn’t said anything to the newspapers. I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player; it is all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time.”

McTominay’s impressive form – he has already scored 10 goals across all competitions this season – has coincided with a period of transition for Manchester United. The club is preparing for the departure of Casemiro at the complete of the current season, creating a void in midfield. Despite this, McTominay appears uninterested in a return to his former club, even as United reportedly considers several midfield targets, including Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte has praised McTominay’s development since joining the club, highlighting a transformation from an attacking threat into a more complete midfielder. “In this year and a half, [McTominay] became a complete player,” Conte said earlier this year. “When I was in England and faced him as an opponent, I always saw his quality, but always one part of his quality—especially to attack the box and score. Instead, we worked with him on the buildup and construction, and I tried [with] difficulty also to transform him into a complete player. He now plays with [Stanislav] Lobotka as two midfielders, and he has improved a lot in the buildup. At the same time, he has never lost the possibility to attack, to be a box-to-box player. Now he is, in my opinion, a really, really top player for an important club.”

McTominay’s contract with Napoli runs until 2028, and the club has demonstrated a reluctance to sell players to the Premier League, even in the face of substantial offers. Manchester United’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements is expected to continue this summer, but a move for their former player appears increasingly unlikely given McTominay’s public commitment to Napoli and the club’s financial stance.

Rasmus Hojlund recently spoke of conversations with McTominay, noting the differing stages of their careers. “I spoke a bit with the huge Scott [McTominay],” Hojlund said in January. “We’re not on the same path in our careers, I still have a lot to learn. Whereas, he’s a bit older and probably had a bit more on his back to go out there and prove himself.”
