Mau y Ricky don’t shy away from talking about their famous father, Ricardo Montaner.The Venezuelan singer-songwriters are proud sons of the Latine pop icon. But the musical talent in the Montaner family doesn’t stop there. Their sister, Evaluna Montaner, and brother-in-law, Camilo, are also making waves in the industry. Listen closely, and you’ll even hear Evaluna and Camilo’s voices on Mau y Ricky’s new album, “Hotel Caracas”—which also marked the brothers’ return to Venezuela after more than ten years.Family and community are central to everything they do.
“There’s no hiding the obvious,” Ricky Montaner says. ”I’m proud that as a family, we’ve been able to lift each other up, inspire each other, and connect with people.It’s gorgeous and special.”
Growing up in Caracas, mau and Ricky watched their father perform hits like “Tan Enamorados” and “Bésame” to packed arenas. He’d sometimes invite them onstage to sing with him. Ricardo also ran a record label with Servando & Florentino, Venezuelan brothers who often rehearsed at the Montaner home. This showed the younger Montaners that a prosperous sibling duo in Latin music was possible. Now, the sons are returning the favor, inviting their dad to collaborate on their songs. A hidden track on “Muriendo de Miedo” features Ricardo’s voice in beautiful harmony with his sons.
“It’s full circle,” Mau Montaner explains. “He had to be a part of it. We’re so grateful for his support, both as a father and as an influence in our early years. it’s our way of paying homage to him, musically thanking him, and honoring everything he’s done.”
