Premiering following its Los Angeles debut on September 17, Brothers marks the first time Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have reunited on television since starring as Rustin Cohle and Martin Hart in HBO’s True Detective in 2014. The comedy is inspired by a real-life family anecdote involving the revelation that Ma Mac once “knew” Harrelson’s father, sending the two actors on a quest to discover if they are actually biological brothers. While the premise is grounded in their personal history, the series introduces fictionalized elements to protect their families. As Matthew McConaughey explained, they fictionalized the narrative enough so that there is nothing in it that anyone can approach their children about, maintaining a loose portrayal of ages and family size rather than a strict documentary.
Facing Ma Mac After the Premiere
The anticipation leading up to the release proved nerve-wracking for the two co-stars, particularly regarding how Kay McConaughey would receive the project. “I was worried about Ma Mac seeing it,” Woody Harrelson told Entertainment Weekly. Harrelson recalled catching her right as she walked up the aisle after watching the series and asking for her verdict. Matthew McConaughey noted that his mother spent the lead-up to the premiere teasing them, declaring that they had one major problem with the show because they failed to cast her to play herself. Instead of casting Ma Mac, the production brought in Holland Taylor to play the fictionalized version of her character.
To the surprise of both actors, the reception from Kay McConaughey was overwhelmingly positive. “I got the same reaction as you did. She was like, ‘I loved it,'” Matthew McConaughey told Harrelson, noting that his mother praised Taylor’s performance as great and very fun. “I’m so surprised that was my mom’s reaction,” McConaughey added, throwing his hands in the air during their interview with Entertainment Weekly.
