Matteo Verzini Designs Art Deco Apartment with Gold Zelliges
Mi objetivo es también contar con esta base de colores que luego contrarresto con toques de matices opuestos,
explained interior designer Matteo Verzini regarding the design approach behind an art déco apartment transformation in Paris reported by admagazine.com.
The residence bridges Moroccan craftsmanship with European modernism through a combination of materials, including gold-leaf zelliges, Rosso Alba marble, Calacatta Viola marble, and custom architectural details. The design weaves a continuous thread of materials and colors from room to room, creating a cohesive aesthetic that merges 1930s Paris with references to Marrakech.
The Kitchen Backsplash and Living Area
The history of the Art Deco apartment centers around a zellige with gold leaf that forms the spectacular kitchen backsplash, featuring small gold mosaics inserted one by one into adjacent cabinet doors as an echo. This is paired with Rosso Alba marble for the countertop and island-bench, along with Calacatta Viola marble for a mahogany-stained oak table. Copper hardware references the texture of the lowered ceiling with beveled edges, a material palette that extends to curtains featuring gradients of small embroidered squares. A touch of sky blue on the bench backrest fabric breaks up a monochromatic range that might otherwise lean too heavily into tone-on-tone.
In the living room, the fireplace frame houses a television screen and features turned pillars designed to offer a stylized diamond-shaped profile. On the wall to the right of the fireplace, two Pierre Chareau sconces are placed one above the other to serve as decorative illumination. Flooring leading toward the bedrooms incorporates marble and burgundy-and-gold zellige insertions within the parquet.
El Baño Evoca El Estilo De Un Hammam
Es ese aspecto un tanto ritual y espectacular del baño lo que quise infundir,
Verzini stated, describing the hammam-style bathroom designed to resemble a small hotel suite with constant references to Marrakech and the Villa des Orangers. The space blends gold-leaf zelliges with subtle coffee, ocre, and burgundy tones on the bathtub walls. The fully renovated floor includes heating for optimal comfort, while the sink cabinet and dressing rooms with mirrored doors are integrated into two large beveled arches typical of the art déco style.

The interior continues its emphasis on handmade craftsmanship through details such as mosaics embedded individually into dressing room doors. The Calacatta Viola marble seen in the kitchen also reappears in the primary bedroom’s bathroom, where it is paired with eggplant tones featured in the bed’s bedspread and cushions.
