Matt LaFleur Says Packers Plan to Keep Josh Jacobs Amid Allegations
“We’re going to allow the NFL to do its process, but I would anticipate him being a member of us moving forward,” Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Monday regarding running back Josh Jacobs.
Heading into November 2026, the Green Bay Packers plan to keep Josh Jacobs on their roster following the public release of previous allegations against the running back, who pleaded no contest to two misdemeanour charges stemming from a May altercation with his then-girlfriend. LaFleur addressed the team’s stance during a media session, stating the franchise intends to let the league’s disciplinary process play out.
Jacobs Pleads No Contest to Battery and Criminal Damage
Jacobs pleaded no contest on Sept. 10, 2026, to misdemeanour charges of battery and criminal damage to property. The legal action followed a May 26, 2026, arrest after his then-girlfriend told police that Jacobs had grabbed her and thrown her to the ground three days earlier on May 23, causing her to hit her head and having her phone taken while she was on the ground. Responding officers reported noticing redness on her face and neck along with a bump on the back of her head.
In response to a public records request, the Hobart-Lawrence (Wisconsin) Police Department released investigative records that included the accounts of three other women reporting similar incidents from previous years. Lawyers representing Jacobs said he has a “substantial body of tangible evidence” disputing the allegations that surfaced in Friday’s records release. Legal counsel David Z. Chesnoff, Richard A. Schonfeld, and Clarence F. Duchac III stated that Jacobs took responsibility for the May incident.
The NFL stated that its investigation into Jacobs remains ongoing, leaving the running back subject to potential further discipline from the league. An NFL spokesman noted that the league would review the newly released police file accounts as part of its ongoing review.
On-Field Return and Production
Jacobs spent the first six games of the 2026 season on the commissioner’s exempt list, which barred him from playing or practising. Since returning to the active lineup for the Packers’ last two games, Jacobs has recorded 32 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown, alongside 11 catches for 68 yards and two additional scores. He scored twice in a 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers, celebrating one touchdown by briefly putting his hands together behind his back.

Jacobs explained after the game that the gesture paid homage to a gospel song titled “Break Every Chain.” Social media criticism followed from viewers who believed he was simulating being handcuffed. LaFleur stated that he and Jacobs discussed the celebration after reviewing the tape.
