Masvingo City Council opens temporary shelter after hailstorm
Heavy rains, strong winds, and large hailstones struck Masvingo Town and surrounding rural communities shortly after 17:00 on Monday, blowing off rooftops, shattering vehicle windows, and leaving multiple families exposed to the elements.
Emergency Shelter Opened at Mucheke and Rujeko Halls
The municipal authority acted immediately following the evening storm to address the emerging humanitarian and infrastructural crisis. Mayor of Masvingo, Councillor Aleck Tabe, addressed the city in an urgent update, describing the storm’s impact as extensive and deeply distressing. Municipal authorities activated the District Civil Protection Unit and deployed engineering and emergency teams to assess the full extent of the structural damage across residential neighborhoods and critical city infrastructure.
The designated municipal halls serve a dual purpose for displaced residents. Mayor Tabe encouraged affected households to utilize Mucheke Hall and Rujeko Hall not only for temporary accommodation but also for the safe, secure storage of furniture and household belongings while formal damage assessments continue.
Widespread Destruction Across Masvingo Town and Rural Areas
The severe weather event ranked as one of the worst to hit the area in recent years, affecting both Masvingo Town and surrounding rural communities, including Renco. Large chunks of ice pelted buildings and vehicles, leaving cars visibly dented with shattered windscreens and windows.
Residential properties sustained heavy structural damage. Multiple homes and churches suffered from entire roofs being blown off or left leaking, allowing heavy rainwater to flood living spaces. Security walls gave in to the pressure of the torrential downpours, and vegetation was destroyed, leaving local florists facing losses. Essential domestic infrastructure also took a direct hit, with numerous solar panels broken or rendered inoperable during ongoing power outages.
Mayor Tabe Urges Community Solidarity for Recovery
City authorities are coordinating a unified recovery effort in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders and emergency response structures. Mayor Tabe issued a heartfelt appeal for calm and community solidarity, urging residents to assist one another with a specific focus on vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
The extent of the damage is significant and deeply distressing. Most concerning is that several families have been left with their homes exposed to the elements tonight.
Mayor Tabe stated in his message to residents, adding that the municipality stands together with every affected family during the disaster.
Severe Weather Follows El Nino Probability Warnings
The severe weather arrives against a backdrop of heightened seasonal alerts. The Meteorological Services Department recently warned of an 88% to 94% probability of an El Nino phase occurring during the 2026/27 rainy season. Affected communities now face the complex task of repairing structural roofs, replacing broken windowpanes, and securing damaged household goods while local authorities finalize comprehensive reconstruction efforts.
