Masters of the Universe Hits No. 1 on Streaming After Box Office Struggle

August 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Amazon’s Masters of the Universe, which struggled with a $114 million global box office against a $170 million budget, secured the No. 1 spot on Nielsen’s streaming ratings for the week of July 20-26. The film generated 1.17 billion minutes of viewing time, marking a significant post-theatrical turnaround for the Mattel-based franchise.

The Streaming Power Play

In the weeks following its June 5 theatrical debut, the commercial trajectory of Masters of the Universe shifted from a box office disappointment to a dominant force in the SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) space. According to Nielsen’s viewership data for the week of July 20-26, the film reached 1.17 billion minutes of watch time. This performance secured its place as one of only two titles to cross the billion-minute threshold during that period, alongside The Big Bang Theory, which accumulated 1.12 billion minutes across 281 episodes.

The film’s rapid transition to Prime Video on July 22—just over a month after its theatrical premiere—appears to have fueled this surge in engagement. While the theatrical run saw the film gross $114 million against a $170 million production budget, the streaming metrics suggest a substantial audience appetite that did not materialize at the cinema.

Analyzing the Monetization Gap

While Masters of the Universe failed to recoup its production costs during its initial theatrical run, the streaming figures represent a “second life” for the asset. As noted by Gizmodo, if one were to estimate the equivalent value of the 1.17 billion minutes watched, the reach is substantial, even if the direct revenue model for streaming differs significantly from traditional ticket sales.

The production features an ensemble cast including Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, and Jared Leto. The film’s ability to draw high engagement suggests that the brand equity of the 1980s Mattel franchise remains potent, even if the conversion from brand awareness to theater attendance proved difficult.

Strategic Distribution and Industry Impact

Kevin Wilson, Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief, previously noted that the film’s opening was intended as a “critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy,” aimed at building engagement that extends beyond the theatrical window, as reported by Variety.

Future Outlook for the Franchise

The data confirms that while the theatrical model struggled to capture the desired audience, the home market remains a viable venue for high-concept, nostalgic IP.
