Massachusetts to Modernize Bus Transit with $105.7 Million Federal Grant
BOSTON, MA – Massachusetts will receive $105.7 million in federal funding to overhaul and expand bus services across the state, the Baker-Polito Management announced today. The grant, awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Grants for Buses and Bus facilities Program, will support the purchase of new, low- and zero-emission buses and modernize existing bus infrastructure.
This considerable investment arrives as Massachusetts seeks to improve public transportation accessibility, reduce carbon emissions, and address ongoing challenges with aging infrastructure. The funds will be distributed to several Regional Transit Authorities (RTAs) and the MBTA, impacting commuters and communities throughout the commonwealth. The upgrades aim to enhance service reliability, improve passenger experience, and contribute to the state’s climate goals.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will oversee the allocation of the grant funds. Approximately $74.4 million will go towards the purchase of 78 new buses, including electric and hybrid models, benefiting the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA), Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA), Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA), Greater Lowell Regional Transit Authority (GLRTA), Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA), Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA), and the Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA).
An additional $31.3 million will be dedicated to facility improvements, including upgrades to maintenance facilities and the construction of new bus shelters. The MBTA will receive $25.3 million to support the purchase of electric buses and charging infrastructure.
“This funding is a game-changer for public transportation in Massachusetts,” said Transportation Secretary Jamey Tesler in a statement. “These investments will not only improve the rider experience but also help us achieve our ambitious climate goals by transitioning to a cleaner, more lasting transportation system.”
