Massachusetts to upgrade bus services with $105.7M grant

Massachusetts to Modernize ‍Bus Transit with $105.7 Million Federal Grant

BOSTON, MA – Massachusetts will receive $105.7 million in federal funding ⁣to overhaul and expand bus services across the state, the Baker-Polito ‌Management announced today. The grant, awarded ‌through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Grants for Buses and Bus ⁢facilities Program, will support the purchase ⁢of new, low- and zero-emission buses and modernize existing bus infrastructure.

This considerable ​investment arrives as ⁢Massachusetts seeks⁣ to improve public transportation accessibility, reduce carbon emissions, ​and address ongoing​ challenges with aging infrastructure. The funds will be distributed to several Regional Transit‍ Authorities (RTAs) and the MBTA, impacting commuters and communities throughout the commonwealth. The⁣ upgrades aim to enhance service reliability, improve passenger experience, and contribute to the state’s climate goals.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation ⁣(MassDOT) will oversee the allocation of the grant funds. Approximately $74.4 million will go towards the purchase of 78 new buses, including ‍electric and hybrid models, benefiting the Berkshire Regional Transit⁢ Authority​ (BRTA), Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA), Franklin Regional⁢ Transit Authority (FRTA), Greater Lowell Regional Transit Authority ‍(GLRTA), Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA),‌ Pioneer Valley ⁣Transit ‌Authority (PVTA), and the Worcester Regional Transit⁢ Authority⁤ (WRTA).

An⁣ additional $31.3 million will be dedicated to ⁤facility improvements, including upgrades to maintenance facilities and the construction of ⁣new bus shelters. The MBTA will receive $25.3 million ‍to support the purchase of electric buses​ and charging infrastructure.

“This ​funding is a game-changer for public transportation in Massachusetts,” ​said Transportation Secretary Jamey Tesler in a statement. “These investments will not only improve⁢ the rider ‌experience but also help us achieve our​ ambitious climate goals by transitioning‍ to a cleaner, more lasting transportation system.”
