Takoma Park Bookstore Donates Proceeds from Senator McCormick Book to Immigrant Advocacy Group

Takoma Park, Maryland – People’s Book, a local bookstore, has announced it will donate over $7,000 in proceeds from the sale of U.S. Senator Dave McCormick‘s book, Who Believed in You, to CASA, a nonprofit institution dedicated to advocating for immigrants. The bookstore’s decision follows a bulk purchase of 500 copies of the book, reportedly made by lobbyists representing Senator McCormick.

Matt Bormet,co-owner of People’s Book, stated in a press release that while the store does not wish to associate with individuals perceived as contributing to the current immigration crisis, they also oppose book banning. “So we filled the request,” Bormet explained. “But in order to live our values, we’re taking his money and giving it to folks who can do some good with it.”

Bormet identified the lobbyists who purchased the books as Marty Obst and Jeff Miller, describing the transaction as a “common tactic amongst these types to goose their sales numbers.” As of the original reporting, neither Obst nor Miller’s offices, nor senator McCormick’s spokesperson, had responded to requests for comment. This story will be updated if responses are received.

People’s Book has characterized Senator McCormick as “a human rubber stamp for the Trump agenda” and extended an invitation for him to “buy additional books from us so we can give more of his massive piles of wealth to other worthy causes.” This incident marks a recent instance of McCormick encountering opposition from a small business.Last year, Max’s Steaks, a Philadelphia cheesesteak establishment, requested that McCormick not return after he held a campaign event at their shop without prior notification to the owners.
