Marvel Actors Call for Release of Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouti
A coalition of more than 20 actors from the Marvel film and television franchises has thrown its weight behind an international campaign to secure the release of Marwan Barghouti from Israeli custody. The “Free Marwan” initiative, launched by the prisoner’s family and backed by various civil society organizations, demands that the United Nations and international governments intervene.
Marvel Stars Join Global Push for Barghouti Release
The movement draws its star power from a roster including Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Don Cheadle. They are joined by Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Sir Ian McKellen, Brian Cox, Hugo Weaving, Daniel Brühl, and Elliot Page. This effort ripples outward to include hundreds of other public figures, among them writers like Margaret Atwood and musicians such as Sting, Annie Lennox, and Paul Simon. Organizers explicitly frame the campaign as a parallel to global solidarity movements that sought the release of Nelson Mandela during the apartheid era in South Africa.
Allegations of Mistreatment and Legal Challenges
The campaign characterizes Barghouti’s ongoing imprisonment as a matter of “grave concern.” Proponents cite allegations of physical mistreatment and the denial of legal rights as central reasons for their advocacy.

Barghouti, 67, has been incarcerated by Israel since 2002. Two years later, an Israeli court convicted him on charges related to his involvement in attacks during the Second Intifada, handing down a sentence of five life terms plus 40 years. Throughout the proceedings, Barghouti rejected the legitimacy of the court and refused to recognize its jurisdiction. An expert report commissioned by the Inter-Parliamentary Union previously concluded the trial failed to meet international fair-trial standards, pointing specifically to concerns regarding his arrest in the occupied West Bank and his subsequent transfer.
The Security Standoff
Israeli authorities maintain that Barghouti remains a significant security risk. Consequently, he has been historically excluded from prisoner exchange negotiations. Critics of the campaign emphasize his criminal convictions, arguing that international pressure seeks to undermine judicial findings regarding his role in violence that resulted in civilian deaths.

Persistent Influence in Palestinian Politics
Despite two decades behind bars, Barghouti retains a grip on Palestinian politics. Polling data from the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, published in August, shows he maintains high levels of support. In a hypothetical presidential election, he polled at 54 percent against other potential candidates, with support reaching 63 percent among likely voters in the occupied West Bank.
Supporters of the “Free Marwan” campaign argue that his release could serve as a catalyst for Palestinian political unity. However, the Israeli government maintains that his conviction for involvement in militancy precludes his release.
