Married at First Sight UK Expert Dies After Illness
Mel Schilling, a relationship expert known for her role on the British reality television show “Married at First Sight,” has died at the age of 54 following a battle with cancer, her husband Gareth Brisbane announced on Instagram Tuesday.
Brisbane shared the news of her passing, stating Schilling died “peacefully, in the arms of her loved ones.” The announcement followed a public disclosure in December 2023 that Schilling had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer which had metastasized to her liver and lungs, according to reports.
Schilling joined the British version of “Married at First Sight” in 2016 as a dating coach and psychotherapist, offering guidance to couples participating in the social experiment where individuals marry strangers. The show, originally a Danish format, has gained international popularity with versions airing in multiple countries, including a German adaptation that began in 2014.
The series involves matching participants by a panel of experts based on specific criteria, with the intention of creating lasting relationships through marriage. Paul C. Brunson, Charlene Douglas, and Schilling herself were listed as key experts on the show’s official website.
News of Schilling’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance from fans and colleagues. The show’s broadcaster, Channel 4, has not yet issued a formal statement.
“Married at First Sight UK” is currently available for streaming on Joyn in Germany, with seven seasons and 71 episodes produced as of March 2026, according to fernsehserien.de.
