Marquez Wins Brazilian MotoGP Sprint Race: Results & Updates
Marc Marquez of the Ducati Lenovo Team secured victory in the inaugural MotoGP Sprint race held in Brazil on Saturday, overcoming a late challenge from Fabio Di Giannantonio of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team. The race, held at the Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna in Goiânia, marked MotoGP’s return to Brazil after a 22-year absence.
Di Giannantonio, who started from pole position, led for the majority of the 15-lap race, establishing a lead of over one second at one point. However, a mistake at Turn 12 during the final lap allowed Marquez to close the gap and ultimately seize the win, finishing just two tenths of a second ahead of his rival. The victory is Marquez’s first Sprint race win of the season.
The race wasn’t without its challenges. A sinkhole on the track caused a significant delay earlier in the day, disrupting the schedule and requiring repairs before the Sprint race could commence. Heavy rain on Friday had similarly initially delayed proceedings, with the first dry session taking place on Saturday morning.
Jorge Martin, riding for Aprilia Racing, finished third, marking his first podium appearance since the Soldairity GP in 2024 and a successful return to full fitness. The result was particularly notable given Martin’s crash during qualifying, where five riders in total fell at Turn 4, including Francesco Bagnaia and Marquez himself.
The qualifying session was described as dramatic, with multiple crashes occurring at Turn 4, which proved to be the most challenging corner throughout the weekend. Fabio Di Giannantonio also experienced a fall during qualifying, despite ultimately securing pole position.
The race saw a strong start from Quartararo, who moved into third place early on, briefly challenging Marquez for second. However, he was later overtaken by Bezzecchi and Martin. Ai Ogura also demonstrated competitive pace, holding off Quartararo for a period.
The Brazilian Grand Prix continues on Sunday with the main race, where Marquez will look to build on his Sprint victory. The Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna presented a latest challenge for all riders, with no prior MotoGP testing having taken place at the 3.835-kilometre circuit.
