Marlon Brando: Iconic Roles in The Godfather & Apocalypse Now

February 17, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Robert Duvall, the Academy Award-nominated actor celebrated for his nuanced performances across six decades, has died, according to reports emerging on February 16, 2026. He was 93 years traditional.

Duvall’s career spanned a remarkable range of roles, but he is particularly remembered for his collaborations with director Francis Ford Coppola. He delivered indelible performances in two of Coppola’s most iconic films: The Godfather (1972) and Apocalypse Now (1979). In The Godfather, Duvall portrayed Tom Hagen, the Corleone family’s consigliere, a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His portrayal of Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, a flamboyant and detached helicopter pilot, further cemented his reputation for bringing complexity and conviction to his characters.

Beyond his work with Coppola, Duvall’s filmography includes notable appearances in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Cool Hand Luke (1967), and The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid (1972). He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in 1983’s Tender Mercies.

According to a recent review published by HeyUGuys, Coppola’s 1997 re-edit of The Godfather, titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, offered a different perspective on the saga, and Duvall’s performance as Hagen remained a critical component of the narrative.

Throughout his career, Duvall was consistently praised for his dedication to his craft and his ability to embody a wide spectrum of characters with authenticity. The Guardian recently described him as “a vigorous and subtle actor who always performed with passion and conviction.”

Although George Lucas’s success with Star Wars reportedly caused Coppola some professional sadness, as reported by SlashFilm, Duvall’s own contributions to cinematic history remain secure.

Details regarding a memorial service have not yet been released.
