IndyCar Race Shifts Gears, Heading to markham for 2026
MARKHAM, ON – The roar of IndyCar engines is set to echo through the streets of Markham, Ontario, as the Grand Prix of Toronto prepares for a significant relocation. the open-wheel racing series announced today it will move the event from its long-time home at Exhibition Place in Toronto to the northeastern suburb of Markham, wiht a revised race date in mid-August. The event will be known as the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham.
The multi-year agreement, welcomed by Ontario’s Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden, ensures the continuation of a nearly four-decade tradition of indycar racing within the province. “The Indy is a premier motorsport event and a cornerstone of Ontario’s events calendar,” Lumsden stated.”This move will continue to drive tourism, boost our economy, and reinforce ontario’s reputation as a world-class sporting destination.”
For 38 years, Exhibition Place has served as the backdrop for the Grand Prix of Toronto, dating back to its inaugural race in 1986. The shift to Markham represents a new chapter for the event and a significant investment in the York Region.
The temporary 3.52-kilometre circuit will be constructed in Markham’s downtown core, utilizing Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Designed by Tony Cotman of NZR Consulting, the 12-turn track promises a challenging layout featuring high-speed straightaways, a double-sided pit lane, and demanding technical sections.
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the event. “We are thrilled to welcome the exhilarating experience of IndyCar Series racing to our city in 2026,” he said.”Markham is ready to build on its strong sports legacy and provide a vibrant new home for this celebrated summer tradition.”
City officials anticipate the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham will attract over 140,000 spectators over a three-day weekend, generating considerable economic benefits through sport tourism, hospitality, and related services. Scarpitti confirmed the event is projected to become the largest sporting event in the York Region.
Early construction on the track and festival grounds is already underway, coordinated with partners like Metrolinx. The 2026 race is scheduled to take place August 14-16, a slight shift from the traditional July timeframe.
