NSW Premier Chris Minns has stated that former One Nation MP Mark Latham’s alleged behavior is “wholly unacceptable in our democracy” as Labor prepares too refer Latham to the privileges committee.
The move follows Latham’s use of parliamentary privilege to share private details from a psychologist’s report concerning rival MP Alex Greenwich. Minns indicated that Labor will proceed with the motion when parliament resumes in August, expressing hope for broad cross-party support to send a clear message against such conduct.
Minns also commented on the general appropriateness of parliamentary members sending lewd texts during sessions, calling it a “pretty basic expectation” that members remain focused on their constituents while in parliament.
Separately, Latham’s former partner is seeking an interim order in court, with a hearing scheduled for July 30, and a final two-year order, alleging a “sustained pattern of abuse.” Latham strongly denies these claims.
The Premier emphasized his focus on the public and expressed a desire for the truth to emerge through proper examination, noting that Latham has previously used commentary from him or others in his own disputes. This publication does not assert the truth of the claims against Latham, only that they have been made and will be contested in court.
