Rep.Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) expressed outrage this week over the potential for significant premium increases in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace, warning that premiums coudl more than double for many Americans if enhanced tax credit subsidies are allowed to expire. “I am absolutely disgusted that Obamacare premiums are set to skyrocket, potentially doubling for families,” Greene stated in a social media post.
the looming increases stem from the scheduled expiration of pandemic-era enhancements to ACA subsidies on December 31. However, the impact could be felt much sooner, as insurers begin setting rates for 2026 during open enrollment, which begins November 1 in moast states.If Congress fails to act and extend the credits, insurers fear a lack of certainty and are likely to raise premiums accordingly.
According to a recent report by the Kaiser Family Foundation,average premiums for subsidized enrollees could rise from $888 this year to $1,904 in 2026 if the enhanced premium tax credits are not renewed. This would disproportionately affect the roughly 14.5 million Americans currently receiving subsidies through the ACA marketplace, potentially pricing many out of health insurance coverage. The debate over extending the subsidies is currently entangled in broader negotiations surrounding federal funding and potential government shutdowns.
