Mario Kart World Update 1.6.0: New Bob-omb Blast Mode & Improvements

March 31, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Nintendo has released a significant update for Mario Kart World, bringing the game to version 1.6.0 and reintroducing the Bob-omb Blast battle mode. The update, which went live on March 30, 2026, also includes adjustments to several in-game elements, impacting item performance and character dynamics.

The return of Bob-omb Blast, a mode previously featured in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, allows players to utilize up to ten Bob-ombs simultaneously in Battle Mode. The distance a Bob-omb is thrown is determined by how long the L Button is held, adding a strategic element to the chaotic gameplay.

Beyond the addition of Bob-omb Blast, Nintendo has focused on refining existing game mechanics. The Bullet Bill item has been buffed, receiving an increased range of lateral movement and improved speed on sections of Bowser’s Castle, Starview Peak, and Rainbow Road. The update also makes it easier for players to maintain momentum and follow shortcuts immediately after exiting Bullet Bill form, addressing a previous issue where speed reduction hindered route optimization.

Conversely, the boomerang item has undergone a nerf, with its range reduced and the number of consecutive throws limited. Nintendo has also adjusted the probability of obtaining specific items from item boxes during races, though the specifics of these changes remain undisclosed.

A notable change impacts character recovery after collisions. Invincibility time following a spin or crash now varies depending on the character and vehicle weight, with heavier characters receiving a longer period of protection. This adjustment aims to balance gameplay and potentially influence character and vehicle selection strategies.

Further refinements address minor gameplay issues. Players will no longer be crushed by environmental hazards like Thwomps although spinning or crashing, and can now be hit by lightning or Spiny Shells immediately after recovering from being crushed. The update also prevents Bob-ombs and Bananas from bouncing on the vines of Ivy Piranha Plants.

The update arrives as Mario Kart World continues to perform strongly on the Nintendo Switch 2, recently being identified as the best-selling game on the platform, according to Nintendo data.
