SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners‘ offense exploded for 32 runs over three consecutive wins this weekend, leading fans to jokingly credit a local man’s online purchase of a “curse-lifting” service.
Steven Blackburn of Lake Stevens shared on social media that he had hired a witch through Etsy in an attempt to break a perceived slump for the team. Blackburn stated he didn’t anticipate any real effect from the purchase.
“I said, ‘Hey, can you please help the Mariners get out of a funk?’ I didn’t expect it to go anywhere. I was just kind of hoping for the best and then all of a sudden they score 28 runs in two days,” Blackburn said.
The Mariners’ offensive surge began Saturday and continued through Monday, resulting in three straight victories. The team scored 28 runs in the two days following Blackburn’s post.
The timing of the scoring spree quickly caught the attention of fans online, who connected it to Blackburn’s post. The Mariners’ official social media account also acknowledged the unusual turn of events.
Blackburn emphasized that his post was intended as a joke, but it resonated with fans seeking a positive narrative as the season progresses.
The idea of a lifted curse has become a talking point surrounding the team’s recent success.
The Mariners will continue their series against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park.
Fans are now watching to see if the Mariners can maintain their winning streak and whether their ”lucky charm” will continue to bring positive results.
