Two Indonesian Marine soldiers were killed and another seriously wounded during a firefight with an armed criminal group (KKB) in Maybrat Regency, South West Papua, on Sunday, March 22nd. The fallen soldiers have been identified as Marine Sergeant Anumerta Andi Suvio and Marine Private First Class Anumerta Elki Saputra, according to statements released Monday by the Indonesian Navy.
The incident occurred after a routine patrol conducted by personnel from the Koops Habema Task Force in Sori Village, South Aifat District, was ambushed by the KKB, officials said. The KKB reportedly initiated the attack with a sudden ambush, triggering a gun battle.
In addition to the two fatalities, Marine Corporal Eko Sutikno sustained severe injuries during the clash and is currently receiving intensive medical care.
The bodies of both soldiers were honored in a military ceremony at the 1st Marine Brigade in Cilandak, South Jakarta, presided over by Marine Corps Commander Lieutenant General TNI (Mar) Endi Supardi. The ceremony was attended by numerous military personnel and marked by a somber atmosphere, according to Navy officials.
“The departure of these two soldiers leaves a deep sorrow for the entire Marine Corps family, but also serves as an example of the spirit of dedication, courage, and loyalty of a soldier,” stated Navy Information Service Head First Fleet Admiral TNI Tunggul.
The remains of Marine Sergeant Anumerta Andi Suvio were transported to his hometown in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, for a military burial. Marine Private First Class Anumerta Elki Saputra’s body was sent to Padang, West Sumatra, for a similar ceremony.
Admiral Tunggul emphasized that the Indonesian Navy is focused on ensuring the fulfillment of all rights and benefits for the deceased soldiers and their families. “Our main focus is to provide the last tribute that is worthy of the country’s patriots, as well as ensuring that all the rights of the deceased and the families they left behind are properly fulfilled,” he said.
