Marilyn Monroe to Shine at 44th torino Film Festival
Turin, Italy – The 44th edition of the Torino Film Festival, set to be directed for a third time by Giulio Base, will honor the enduring legacy of Marilyn Monroe. The festival will feature a major retrospective dedicated to the iconic actress,coinciding with the centennial of her birth in 2026.
Monroe remains one of cinema’s moast recognizable and captivating figures, celebrated for her striking beauty, distinctive style, and multifaceted personality. Beyond her success in a string of memorable films, she became synonymous with the “femme fatale” archetype and a symbol of Hollywood glamour. Her personal life, often marked by challenging relationships and internal struggles, onyl amplified her mystique, a narrative further cemented by her tragic death at the age of 36.
“following our celebrations of Marlon Brando in 2024 and Paul Newman in 2025, we felt it fitting to dedicate the 2026 retrospective to a woman – and to a true legend: Marilyn Monroe,” stated Base. “She was more than just an actress; she was a myth, a radiant icon etched into the collective imagination.”
The festival’s promotional image will feature a poignant photograph from Monroe’s final photoshoot, captured just days before her passing by photographer George Barris in Santa Monica, 1962. This image, part of a series known as “the Last Photos,” encapsulates both her enduring beauty and a subtle sense of vulnerability, hinting at a premonition of her lasting impact.
Notably, the National Cinema Museum of Turin already houses three original prints from this iconic beach photoshoot, acquired at a 1997 Los Angeles auction. These signed photographs, alongside other personal effects and jewelry belonging to the star, are currently on display at the Mole Antonelliana, a dedicated space honoring the life and work of Marilyn Monroe.
