Marilyn Gladu Joins Liberal Party: PM Carney Addresses Social Issues and Political Impact

April 9, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Prime Minister Carney has confirmed that Member of Parliament Marilyn Gladu will vote with the government on social issues, including abortion, following her decision to leave the Conservative Party and join the Liberals.

The move marks the fourth floor-crossing of a lawmaker from the Conservative caucus. In response to the transition, Prime Minister Carney stated that the core values of the Liberal Party remain unchanged despite the arrival of a member with a socially conservative background.

Government Alignment and Social Policy

The Prime Minister specifically addressed the potential for friction regarding the government’s legislative agenda on social matters. Carney asserted that Gladu is committed to supporting the government’s position on abortion rights and other key social policy files.

This alignment is intended to ensure caucus cohesion as the government navigates upcoming legislative priorities, mitigating concerns that a socially conservative MP might create internal division on high-profile human rights and health issues.

Conservative Party Response

The Conservative Party has reacted with public condemnation of Gladu’s departure. Speaking on the defection, Conservative MP Bell described the situation as “quality riddance,” reflecting a broader sentiment of outrage within the party toward the move.

The departure has also prompted internal critiques of the current Conservative leadership. A former staffer to Stephen Harper suggested that the loss of a fourth MP to the opposing side weakens the leadership position of Pierre Poilievre.

The Conservative caucus has not issued a formal statement regarding the long-term impact of these departures on their parliamentary strategy.
