Malian Music Icon Mariam Announces Final Album with Late Husband Amadou, Shares Heartfelt Reflection
PARIS-Malian singer Mariam, one half of the internationally acclaimed duo Amadou & Mariam, has revealed their forthcoming album will be the last to feature recordings with her husband and musical partner, Amadou Bagayoko, who passed away in 2023. The album, due in two weeks, represents a poignant final collaboration and a testament to their decades-long love story and musical journey.
The new record holds immense personal meaning for Mariam, serving as both a tribute to Amadou’s legacy and a continuation of their shared artistic vision. “It was he who came up with the title,” she confided, adding that their music has always been rooted in their deep affection for one another and a desire to share that love with the world.Mariam expressed profound grief, stating, “I miss his voice, he is the companion of a lifetime.” The album’s release comes as Mariam navigates her future alongside her son, Sam Backo, 44, who is now joining her on stage and providing strength during this difficult time.
Amadou & Mariam, winners of two Victoires de la Musique awards in 2005 and 2013, enlisted the talents of Congolese star Fally Ipupa, a UNICEF ambassador, and Franco-Spanish musician Manu Chao for the album. Before his death, their son Sam Backo had already begun performing some of Amadou’s verses live, signaling a continuation of the family’s musical tradition. Mariam expressed relief at having her son by her side, stating that he gives her the strength to carry on their musical legacy.
