Marco Rubio Denies Plans to Leave Trump Administration
Marco Rubio Denies Resignation Rumors Amid 2028 Speculation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed reports Thursday that he planned to leave the Trump administration following Republican midterm election losses. Speaking to The New York Times, Rubio stated that it had “always been my plan” to work for President Donald Trump until the end of his term.
The denial countered circulating rumors about his political future. Rubio also serves as Trump’s national security adviser. Speculation regarding an exit intensified after the recent midterm elections, which saw losses for the Republican Party.
Conflicting Reports on White House Discussions
Bloomberg News reported earlier Thursday that Rubio was weighing whether to leave the administration. According to that report, Rubio spoke with White House officials about stepping down and was subsequently asked to stay.
Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for global public affairs, called the Bloomberg article “totally made up.” Johnson also dismissed a report from The Independent regarding a potential 2028 presidential campaign, labeling it “completely baseless fake news.”
Addressing the 2028 Presidential Race
Rubio is widely considered a potential successor to Trump in the 2028 presidential race. Days before the midterm elections, he appeared alongside Trump on the campaign trail, addressing a crowd at a rally. Despite ongoing speculation, Rubio declined to discuss his long-term political ambitions.

“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” Rubio told The New York Times. Regarding the rumors of his departure, he added, “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you.”
Rubio Vows to Serve Through End of Term
Vice President JD Vance is also viewed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. Rubio has previously stated that he would support Vance if he enters the race. For now, Rubio maintains that he intends to remain in his current diplomatic and security posts through the conclusion of Trump’s term.
