Marathon Game Director Leaves Bungie and Addresses Players
Christopher Barrett, the game director for Bungie’s upcoming title Marathon, has departed the studio. His exit follows a period of significant structural changes at the Bellevue-based developer, which is currently a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Departure and Leadership Transition
Barrett confirmed his departure through a message directed at the Marathon community, stating that he is moving on to "new adventures." In his statement, he expressed gratitude to his colleagues and the players who have followed the project’s development.
Bungie has not yet named a permanent successor to the game director position. The company’s leadership remains in a state of flux following multiple rounds of layoffs and internal restructuring over the past year. The studio is currently working to realign its resources toward its two primary franchises: the long-running Destiny series and the extraction shooter Marathon, which serves as a significant pivot for the studio’s portfolio.
Context of Bungie’s Restructuring
The departure of Barrett occurs against a backdrop of broader organizational shifts at Bungie. In July 2024, the studio announced a reduction in its workforce affecting approximately 220 employees, representing roughly 17% of its staff at the time. This decision followed a previous round of layoffs in late 2023.
CEO Pete Parsons stated in a July 2024 company update that the layoffs were necessitated by an overly ambitious development model and an economic climate that had become increasingly challenging for the studio. As part of this reorganization, Bungie is integrating approximately 155 roles into Sony Interactive Entertainment, a move intended to streamline operations and provide greater stability for the studio’s ongoing projects.
Status of the Marathon Project
Marathon, a reimagining of the classic 1994 Bungie title, remains in active development. The project is positioned as a player-versus-player extraction shooter, marking a departure from the studio’s recent focus on narrative-driven looter shooters.
Development of the title continues as the studio navigates the integration of its remaining staff with Sony’s infrastructure. While the studio has maintained its commitment to the project, it has not provided a updated release window following the recent personnel changes. Bungie’s management is expected to provide further updates on the game’s production milestones as the transition of roles to Sony is completed.
