Hollywood Confidential to Honor Mara Brock Akil‘s 25-Year Legacy with ‘Girlfriends’ Party
HOLLYWOOD, CA – Hollywood Confidential will celebrate showrunner Mara Brock Akil and the 25th anniversary of her groundbreaking series Girlfriends with a free, public event on May 6, 2025, at the TUDUM Theater in Hollywood, California. The program will recognize Akil’s significant contributions to television and storytelling, and will precede the launch of the Hollywood Confidential College Tour this fall.
Akil’s Girlfriends, which premiered in 2000, became a cultural touchstone for its nuanced portrayal of Black female friendships and its exploration of contemporary issues. The event will acknowledge Akil’s broader impact as a creator who “reveals the beauty and complexity of humanity,” according to actress Tracie Thoms, who stated, “Mara is so much more than a showrunner, she’s a soul stirrer.”
Wells Fargo is partnering with Hollywood Confidential for the celebration, recognizing Akil’s work as a catalyst for change and authentic expression. “Mara’s iconic career stands as a testament to the power of storytelling to elevate communities and ignite change,” said Gigi Dixon, EVP and head of External Engagement at Wells Fargo.
